What is the difference between American Style and International Style of Ballroom Dance?

A commonly asked question is “What is the difference between American Style and International Style of Ballroom Dance?”

American Style is most popular in the United States while the International Style, also known as the Standard Style, is the main style of choice throughout the rest of the world.

The American Style Smooth Dances (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango and Viennese Waltz) offer freedom and expression.  These dances may be done in closed or open position - allowing for additional tricks and creative arm and hand styling - whereas the International Style Dances (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep and Viennese Waltz) are danced only in closed position and are considered more proper.  Both of these styles travel around the floor and have similar technique.

The American Style Rhythm Dances (Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Samba, Mambo, Bolero and Merengue) have a great variety of patterns and are well-suited for social dancing.  The International Style Latin Dances (Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble and Jive) are more disciplined and technical. The technique is different between the Rhythm and Latin styles and has changed throughout the years.

The American Style has always been more popular for social dancing in the United States and the International Style has long-been considered more competitive.  Whichever style you choose, we are confident that your dance journey will be a joyful one!
